JOHN THE BAPTIST BEHEADED

Scripture Reading: Matthew 14:1-21.

Memory Verse: Matthew 14:5.

  1. What conclusion did Herod draw when he heard of the fame of Jesus? Matthew 14:1,2.
  2. Why was he apprehensive of John’s resurrection? Matthew 14:3,4.
  3. Why did Herod not want to put him to death? Matthew 14:5; Mark 6:19,20.

Note: When the Spirit of God takes hold of His messengers, they are fearless in rebuking sin, no matter what the consequences may be.

  1. What did Herodias’s daughter do on Herod’s birthday celebration? Mark 6:21,22; Matthew 14:6.
  2. What solemn promise was made to her because of this? Matthew 14:7; Mark 6:23.
  3. Upon whose instruction did she ask for John’s head? Matthew 14:8; Mark 6:24.
  4. How did this request effect the king? Matthew 14:9.
  5. To whom did Herodias’s daughter take John’s head? Matthew 14:10,11.
  6. Why was this tragedy allowed? John 3:28-30.

Note: This prophecy of John 3:30 was very comprehensive. John himself might have realized that it would be fulfilled in his death. If his work was not finished, no power on earth could have put an end to his activities.
